New SEIA Poll: Nearly 75% Americans Say Solar Hot Water Good for Jobs and Growth
Sunday, October 23rd, 2011 by Solar Fred

Good news. Despite solar hot water getting less attention in the U.S., a new poll released by the Solar Energy Industry Association (SEIA) shows strong public support for solar water heating and agree that solar water heating helps the economy and create jobs.
The independent poll conducted by Gotham Research Group shows that 74% of Americans agree with the statement, “The growth of the solar water heating industry will produce jobs and help the American economy.”
Breaking down the support by region, 80% of Northeastern residents, 78% of Midwestern residents, 69% of Southern residents, and 73% of Western residents agree with the above statement.
It’s ironic that the South, which has abundant sun hours and heat, agreed less with the statement than those in the North East. The solution is more solar customer education, advocacy, and marketing throughout the U.S., but especially in the South.
The survey also revealed that the public has generally positive perceptions of solar water heating systems, with 48% having a positive response and 4% having a negative. The remaining 52% didn’t have enough information to have an opinion one way or the another.
Once again, this 52% figure indicates that the solar water heating industry must increase customer education and marketing if the industry is to grow as fast as solar PV.
Another indication of the education gap is the finding that 63% of respondents believe solar energy can be used to heat water, heat buildings, cool buildings, heat swimming pools, and produce electricity. It’s wonderful that there’s a majority that knows about solar thermal applications, but if this were a school exam, it would be a failing grade. We need to strive to get those figures to at least a “C” (75%) by the same time next year. The more customers are aware of solar benefits and economics, the more sales will increase for these applications.
As for support for overall solar subsidies, including solar PV, 29% of respondents agreed that the type of energy most deserving of U.S. government support was solar. In second place, 20% chose wind, and 18% chose natural gas. Oil came in at 16% and nuclear came in with only 8%. Finally, coal scraped the bottom of the subsidy opinion barrel with 5%.
While solar is at the top of this broad heap, once again, we need to increase that support through showing customers and policy makers how solar is now more cost effective than ever. Eventually, solar subsidies will have to go away, but for now, subsidies for fossil fuels need to be reduced or eliminated to level the playing field.
What about customer decision dynamics? Survey respondents said that they would either be “extremely likely” (6%), “very likely” (9%), or “somewhat likely” (31%) to consider installing a solar water heating system in their own home. That’s less than half of respondents who might consider solar hot water.
The reason? As usual, it comes down to cost. “The cost of purchasing the system” (72%) and “the cost of maintaining the system” (56%) are the top two concerns for residents in all regions and across key demographic/partisan groups.
In conclusion, there’s a majority of support for solar hot water in the U.S., but as an industry, we must do more to build awareness for solar hot water benefits for homes and large-scale commercial applications, such as laundry facilities, hotels, hospitals, nursing homes, apartment buildings, and restaurants.
The survey was conducted by phone from June 23rd through 26th, 2011 among a representative sample of 1,013 adults, 18+ living in private households in the continental United States. A detailed press release is available here.

Free Hot Water’s Making News with Largest CSI Solar Thermal Install to Date
Thursday, May 19th, 2011 by Solar Fred
A diagram of The Trade Winds Installation
Just wanted to share with our solar community about the news that Free Hot Water is about to start the largest solar water heating project under California’s new solar thermal rebate program. The Tradewinds, a lage condominium complex nestled in the heart of San Jose’s Blossom Valley, is a community of 320 residential units, approximately 80% of which are owner occupied.
How large is large? Well, the compound uses an average of 10,000 gallons of hot water per day for showers, laundry, dishwashers, and other residential hot water necessities. Heating water with solar energy rather than with natural gas will reduce the building’s water heating bills by as much as 60%.
Our engineering department at Free Hot Water designed a system that willl use a total of 183 commercial grade FHW7000 series solar hot water collectors that will be mounted on five tar and gravel roofs of the two story buildings in the Tradewinds complex. Additionally, our COO, Paul Burrowes, calculated that The Tradewinds will produce over 5 million BTU’s daily and save over 250,000 pounds of CO2 on an annual basis.
The Tradewinds will benefit from long-term cost and environmental savings–and also from the new California Solar Initiative (CSI) Thermal Program. The initial calculations for The Tradewinds show a CSI-T rebate value of approximately $186,240. That’s a lot off the top, but as a non-profit home owners association (HOA), the project would have saved even more from the 30% federal investment tax credit and other tax incentives that can be applied to for-profit building owners.
Free Hot Water couldn’t have done the project without the help of TBI Energy, the project manager, and Comfort Energy, the system installer and contractor of record. Breene Kerr, TBI Energy Project Director stated in our joint press release, “TBI Energy is excited to be a part of the largest solar thermal system yet installed under the CSI thermal program. This is a complex installation with three independent solar thermal systems serving hundreds of residents in five different buildings.  TBI Energy’s extensive construction management experience along with Free Hot Water’s proven products and technology gives us the confidence that this project will be successful.  California needs more installations like this one. We look forward to  providing a highly visible example of why solar thermal systems should become as common in this country as the are throughout the rest of the world.”
Comfort Energy’s president, Harry Abbot adds in the release, “It’s successful incentive programs California’s CSI program that make these large projects possible and help create more clean energy jobs for California’s present and future.”
We’re about to start installation and will post some blogs and photos of our progress. If you’re one of our partner installers in California, please let us know how we can help you benefit from the new CSI program.
P.S. Here’s the link to a news item in Builder Magzine about the project.

The full 2010 Solar Thermal Market Report is out. Here are the highlights.
Wednesday, March 16th, 2011 by Solar Fred
 Photo: Flickr/lumaxart
The Solar Energy Industry Association (SEIA) and Greentech Media have published their final market report of 2010 on the U.S. Solar industry. Here are the highlights about the 2010 solar thermal market:
The good news: The U.S. saw close to 30,000 solar pool heating systems installed and 35,500 solar water heating systems were installed.
The okay news: The entire solar thermal industry grew, but not by much. In the end, the 2010 saw a modest 5% growth of installations compared to 2009. Solar pool heating had much better numbers, growing 13% over 2009.
Nevertheless, the report attributes the weak growth of solar hot water in 2010 to several factors: First, the sluggish economy isn’t helping solar hot water or pool heating. Second, the price for gas, solar hot water’s main carbon fuel competitor, has also been fairly low in 2010.
After hitting a peak of over $20/thousand cubic feet (Mcf), residential retail natural gas prices have hovered between $10-$15/thousand cubic feet (Mcf) in the past year. The bottom line is that the return on investment on small residential systems is going to be slower with gas prices so low. However, it should be noted that gas is a commodity, and prices could rise unexpectedly for any number of reasons, making residential more attractive.
In addition, higher volume commercial systems have very attractive incentives right now, especially in California and New York.
SEIA’s report expects the domestic solar water heating market to continue to grow in 2011, but the actual growth rate will be tied to gas and heating oil prices, and they even suggest that if gas prices remain relatively low or go lower, there may be no growth at all, especially for the residential sector. The trend in solar thermal PPA’s (power purchase agreements) may also help to grow the commercial side, and eventually grow the residential market too.
Similarly, the report says that solar pool heating has been hit by the economy and especially the housing bust. As the economy and housing markets recover, especially in solar leading states like California, Florida and Arizona, the report expects the solar pool heating market also to recover.
The top ten states for solar water heating in 2010 were, in order: California, Hawaii, Florida, Arizona, Puerto Rico, Massachusetts, Colorado, North Carolina, Wisconsin, and New York.
The top ten states for solar pool heating installations in 2010 were, in order: Florida, California, Arizona, Oregon, Illinois, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey and Nevada.
The full executive summary of the solar report–which covers solar PV, solar CSP, and solar thermal–is available to be downloaded free here. Enjoy.
In the mean time, let’s keep working towards terrific solar thermal numbers for 2011! As always, let Free Hot Water know if we can help.

Hot News: 3rd Quarter 2010 Solar Thermal Market Report from SEIA
Sunday, December 26th, 2010 by Solar Fred
 Photo: Flickr/lumaxart
SEIA (The Solar Energy Industry Association, of which Free Hot Water is a member) recently released its third quarter 2010 Solar Market Report for the industry. Â Unfortunately for the solar hot water industry, the trends are pointing downward for the last quarter of 2010.
The report includes solar photovoltaic (PV) and large scale solar market data as well, but we thought we’d pick out the solar thermal highlights in the report’s Executive Summary:
- The overall Solar Hot Water Market. The good news: By the close of the third quarter of 2010, 1,660 thousand square feet (tsf) of solar thermal collectors will have been installed in the U.S. The bad news: If the trends continue, the 2010 market will have shrunk by 11% from the 2,289 tsf that was installed in 2009.
- Solar hot water is down because…50% of the solar water heating and solar space heating business in the U.S. is driven by California, Hawaii, Arizona, Puerto Rico and Florida, and a decrease in Hawaii’s tax-based subsidy and Puerto Rico’s slow rebate implementation are seen as one cause of the drop. Business in Puerto Rico should pick up once the rebate program gets its act together.
- Cautiously optimistic for recovery. According to SEIA, the recovery of the solar water heating market depends on a number of factors. Mainly, low gas utility rates and the slow economy have been a drag to the industry, but SEIA still expects the market to recover in 2011 and resume moderate growth in 2015. Though not mentioned here in the executive summary report for some reason, California’s new generous solar thermal rebate should also help increase the demand in the market.
- For solar pool heating, commercial is in better shape than residential. Solar pool heating sales are up slightly, but incentive programs and rebates for large commercial systems have contributed to much larger commercial growth. If these incentives continue through the U.S., SEIA expects the commercial solar pool heating market will continue to grow through 2015, and residential to grow, but at a slower pace.

A Telling InfoGraphic: The Average American’s Energy Consumption. Is this you?
Saturday, September 11th, 2010 by Solar Fred
InfoGraphic from VisualEconomics.com (Click for Larger Image)
I love infographics. Anyone can throw out facts and figures about the average American’s use and source of energy, but it’s another thing to show that information visually and comparatively.
At a glance of the above, I know that:
- 20% of our home’s energy usage goes into heating water. 20%. That’s a huge chunk. Obviously, solar hot water would eliminate a good portion of that chunk, but let’s go further.
- We can also see that 41% of our energy cost is from space heating, to heat our homes. Guess what. Solar thermal (hot water) systems can also be configured to eliminate most of those costs as well. So now we’re up to 61% of our energy costs that could be significantly reduced. But wait there’s more.
- Another 8% is used for air conditioning. And wouldn’t you know it, there are some new solar thermal systems that can be used for cooling air to for air conditioning. So, let’s add another 8% for a grand total of 69% of energy costs that could be eliminated with some type of solar thermal system.
- Naturally, many people use electricity, so if you wanted to kick in purchasing a solar electric system (a different type of solar panel/system than solar hot water/thermal), you could eliminate the other 31%.
Of course, you can go down to the bottom of this infographic and quickly see that most of our energy is currently coming from coal, gas, and oil. But there’s something that this infographic can’t tell you, and that’s to act.
Whether you’re concerned about the recent environmental disasters, increasing costs, or our dependency on foreign oil, don’t just shake your head about this graphic. At the very least, you can:
- Get an energy audit. Knowledge is power (pun intended), and you’re unlikely to do anything until you know where you stand. (We can help you do that, by the way.)
- Research the solar upgrade costs by getting a quote. Again, you may be concerned that doing something is too costly, but you can’t know that until you get a real estimate–which is free–so what can you lose but a little time? (Have you seen our case study of an apartment building going solar?)
- Support clean energy politicians and initiatives. At last, U.S. policies are beginning to support solar and other types of renewable energy, but that could change every time there’s a local or national election. If your candidate is still supporting oil and coal, then tell them to stop and/or vote for someone else. Coal, oil, and gas companies have been getting subsidies for a 100 years now. Shouldn’t they be mature enough to make it on their own now? I think they’ve had more than a fair share of our tax dollars, don’t you?

Solar Thermal and Hot Water News of the Week
Thursday, April 15th, 2010 by Solar Fred
Wisc. police dog sniffs out solar savings (Photo: Flickr/Beige Alert)
Well, it’s been quite a week for solar thermal and solar hot water/solar thermal news.
Of course, we first have to mention that our very own Free Hot Water 7000 Series panel has been approved by the SRCC for 0G-1oo applications. We’re very proud of our 7000 Series and it’s potential to make save apartment buildings and hotels a lot of money on their hot water costs. Please see the details and specifications here in our press release.
In other news, Rhone Resch, the President of the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), delivered the “U.S. Solar Industry Year in Review 2009″ report. Check out the full report here. In terms of solar hot water and solar thermal, 2009 was a rough year for the solar hot water pool installations due to the economy. However, it’s expected that things will improve in 2010 with the economic recovery. The report also mentions California’s goal of installing 200,000 solar water heating systems with its new incentive. If you’d like to take advantage of that incentive, by all means, please contact us for a quote or use our solar thermal cost estimator.
Police in Wisconsin catch solar hot water…for their prison. It’s criminal that more government buildings aren’t taking advantage of solar hot water savings and stimulus funds. But not for La Crosse County law enforcement. They applied for stimulus funds and were granted enough to install 32 solar hot water collectors on their Law Enforcement Center, which includes the County’s prison. The prison cafeteria, laundry, kitchen, and showers will all be able to take advantage of the solar hot water system, saving County tax payers many thousands of dollars over the next two decades. The payback will be within 10 years, says a county official. Read more.
That’s the most important solar hot water news of the week. If you want to make solar hot water news for your business or local government, please contact us for a free estimate. Thanks.
